CORE wanted graphic designers to plan and design a series of large, branded banners advertising CORE and their services prominently around the John Smith Stadium in Huddersfield. CORE had agreed a sponsorship deal with the John Smith Stadium, a 24,000-capacity sports stadium in West Yorkshire, home to Championship football club Huddersfield Town AFC and Rugby Super League side Huddersfield Giants.
As part of the sponsorship, a stand in the stadium would be renamed ‘The CORE Stand.’ They wanted us to create a large ‘The CORE Stand’ banner that would be placed above the entrance to the stand. They also wanted several banner designs for banner displays inside the stadium and alongside the pitch. They wanted the banner designs to be simple, with bold, large text with high visibility so that their message would be clear from a distance.
We began by reviewing the design brief to ensure we had a thorough understanding of what CORE wanted, and that we knew the correct measurements for the banners and all the important information CORE wanted displayed on each banner. We developed a few design drafts for each of the banners, experimenting with layouts and other design elements. CORE requested two banners designs to be placed above the entrance outside the stadium, and one banner design above the entrance to the newly renamed ‘The CORE Stand.’ They also wanted two 50-meter-long banner designs that would be stretched either side along the full length of the pitch.
We embraced a simple, minimal design approach, using CORE’s brand colours and logo, with a strong emphasis on the text. We used a large and bold font so that the message on the banners could be read clearly and was visible from a distance. We arranged the layouts with careful attention to the measurements of each banner to ensure the proportions and design arrangements looked balanced and complimented CORE’s branding. To add something extra to the design, we created fresh new icons symbolising CORE’s key services – Waste Management, IT, Estate’s Management, and Energy – and blended these icon designs into the banner designs as an underlying element.
At every stage of the design process, we gave CORE regular updates and asked for their opinion and input. We made a few minor adjustments based on their feedback. We shared the final designs with CORE for their approval and arranged to have the banners printed and delivered to the stadium. We also supervised the installation of the banners around the stadium to ensure every banner had been placed in the correct location.
